Compliance and Operational Efficiency in Local Authorities

The study revealed conclusively that compliance legislation, most notably the Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act, top the agenda across the public sector. However, with eGoverment deadlines also rapidly approaching, there is growing evidence that a continued focus on top line compliance issues – often on a regulation by regulation basis – is undermining the efficiency with which compliance objectives are met, and the robustness of compliance processes.

Authorities are increasingly aware of the need to exploit technology, not only to meet compliance productivity targets, but also to deliver improvements in customer service.

However, a piecemeal approach to each successive tranche of requirements is unlikely to represent the optimum use of the funding government has made available to address current compliance and productivity goals. Without consistent policies for information retention and retrieval, supported by scalable information lifecycle management technology, long-term compliance may well impose an unsustainable burden upon both resources and budget.

The time to invest in sustainable and scaleable solutions may well be right now.
